As Cochrane (Alberta) experiences rapid growth, its population of older adults is rising faster than ever before. In a community where nearly one in six residents is already over the age of 65, the need to create environments that support independence, dignity, and social inclusion is urgent. Without intentional planning, older adults risk facing barriers in housing, transportation, healthcare access, and opportunities to stay connected to community life.
To respond, the Town of Cochrane, with leadership from Family & Community Support Services (FCSS) and the Age-Friendly Steering Committee, partnered with Intelligent Futures to develop the community’s first Age-Friendly Action Plan. Built through extensive engagement, including surveys, focus groups, and workshops with residents of all ages, the plan reflects both the aspirations and lived realities of Cochrane’s older adults. Aligned with the World Health Organization’s Age-Friendly Cities Framework and Alberta’s Age-Friendly Recognition Program, the plan positions Cochrane to thrive as an inclusive, age-friendly community. The Action Plan lays out eight clear priorities for 2025–2029: from toolkits that promote age-friendly housing and public space design, to improved transportation, new lifelong learning opportunities, and stronger health partnerships. Each action is designed to foster connection, improve accessibility, and ensure that older adults can age well within their community. Beyond serving older residents, these measures create benefits for all—families with young children, people with disabilities, and newcomers alike. By intentionally shaping its built environment, social fabric, and health systems, Cochrane is not just planning for an aging population—it is building a more resilient, inclusive, and connected community for everyone.
